- Appalachian Horticulture Research (Poplarville, MS) $874,244
The research is at Univ. of TN and Tenn. State Univ. and its goal is enable rapid deployment of new products to the marketplace. Frist and Alexander take credit.
- National Grape and Wine Initiative (Davis, CA) $100,000 above FY06 enacted
This program is to support and enhance the public health through improved understanding of the nutritional benefits to be derived from grapes and grape products.
- Greenhouse Nurseries (Maumee Valley, OH) $726,000
This program would provide for greenhouse nurseries to develop a marketing plan to showcase this industry, which has branded itself the “Maumee Valley Growers.”
- Aquaculture (OH) $900,000
The Committee has previously directed that funds for this project be used in northwest and central lake counties. The goal of the program is to establish a program in Ohio to foster the development of a state-wide aquaculture industry.
- Competitiveness of Agriculture Products (WA) $679,000
The goal of this research is to provide information on markets and product technologies that can open higher-valued international markets to U.S. exporters of Pacific Northwest agriculture products.
- Food Marketing Policy Center (CT) $579,000
The goal of the research is to identify marketing problems, analyze them, and make recommendations as to how the problems might be solved. An accomplishment of the data gathered was its use in a Forbes magazine article.
- Fruit and Vegetable Market Analysis (AZ, MO) $350,000
The purpose of this research is to provide timely knowledge and analysis of the impacts of trade, environmental, and monetary, and other public policies and programs upon the Nation’s fruit and vegetable farmers, etc.
- Hydroponic Tomato Production (OH) $180,000
This research will help expand hydroponic production, technology, and cooperative marketing by introducing new crops and developing energy efficient greenhouses.
- Increasing Shelf Life of Agriculture Commodities (ID) $863,000
The purpose of this project is to develop a novel electronic device for near-real time detection of microbial threats in food processing and distribution. It is an excellent example of development of nanotechnology for agriculture and food systems.
- Value-added Product Development form Agricultural Resources (MT) $455,000
There is a national need for developing new industries for production of chemical, synthetic materials, and fuels from sources other than oil. This research looks at carbohydrates as a means to that end.
- Wood Utilization (OR, MS, NC, MN, ME, MI, ID, TN, AK, WV) $6,371,000
This program provides science that addresses problems associated with harvesting, transporting, manufacturing, and marketing economical forest products. Also provides for teaching graduate students to be knowledgeable in wood as a renewable resource.
- Nursery Production (RI) $295,000
It is estimated that new crops information and production standards from these activities will increase industry sales by 5–10 percent. Research on reducing damage by deer in nurseries and landscapes should have an immediate impact of $3,000 to $15,000 per nursery.
- Dairy Education (IA) $229,000
The original goals of this program were foster the development of new family dairy operations, recruit dairy families from other regions to Northeast Iowa, improve the image of the dairy industry, and support specialized dairy production and processing.
- Income Enhancement Demonstration (OH) $1,247,000
The goal of this project is to develop new agricultural businesses and restructure and expand existing businesses in response to domestic and international challenges.
