Feel the "Sacrifice"

Posted by Jeff Dircksen - May 24, 2006

The Times of Trenton is reporting that New Jersey's tax happy Governor Jon Corzine is now planning to add gym memberships to his tax hit list. According to the Governor's spokesman Brendan Gilfillan:
"This continued challenge illustrates the need for shared sacrifice, whether it be this extension of the sales tax, or the governor's office deciding to reduce spending on important priorities addressed in the governor's initial budget proposal."
For more on the "shared sacrifices" that the Governor wants New Jersey's taxpayers to make, read Sam Batkin's recent issue brief on the New Jersey state budget.

The unbelievable aspect of this is that the state in turn is spending lots of money on programs to promote physical fitness!

Putting punitive taxes on gym memberships and then spending gobs of money on health programs makes as much sense as giving subsidies to tobacco farmers and then spending millions of lung cancer research. Yet another example of government trying to meet every special interest demand while squashing the taxpayer.

He'll never give up. If I thought the Republicans were any good in NJ, I would push for their takeover of the Legislature, but they'll probably cave.
