Only to bureaucrats can the idea occur that establishing new offices, promulgating new decrees, and increasing the number of government employees alone can be described as positive and beneficial measures. -- Ludwig von Mises

NTU Vote Alert: H.R. 2761 - The Terrorism Risk Insurance Revision and Extension Act

Posted by Keith Capp - September 19, 2007

******************************************
National Taxpayers Union Vote Alert

NTU urges all Members to vote “NO” on H.R. 2761, the Terrorism Risk Insurance Revision and Extension Act. This bill would extend and expand the federal government’s role in the terrorism reinsurance business for a whopping 15 years.

If Congress unwisely insists on a continued federal reinsurance scheme, the program should at least charge actuarially based rates, cover its own costs, limit the exposure to taxpayers, and encourage development of a private reinsurance market. Therefore, NTU urges all Members to vote “YES” on the amendment offered by Representative Pearce, which would raise the program’s deductible by a 0.5 percentage point higher than what the bill currently provides.

Roll call votes on H.R. 2761 and the Pearce Amendment will be significantly weighted in our annual Rating of Congress.
