What Governors have supported bailout money for their states?

Posted by Joshua Culling - December 02, 2008

I'll admit, I was getting jealous. With all the bailout talk at the federal level, the state government affairs guys such as myself were starting to feel left out. Then the Governator started begging, and now bailout fever has spread to state governments. Why control your spending addictions when you can get free money from the feds? With the number of Governor's mansions calling for bailout money increasing daily, I figured I'd put together a list of those on record asking for some sort of "stimulus" package for the states. If you know of any others, please post their names with a link in the comments.

Surely there are others, including NC House Speaker Joe Hackney (also president of the National Conference of State Legislators). This is definitely a list worth keeping an eye on.

**EDIT: Add CO Gov. Ritter, IA Gov. Culver, IN Gov. Daniels, MT Gov. Schweitzer, NY Gov. Paterson, WA Gov. Gregoire, and MI Gov. Granholm to the list.

Governor Gregoire in Washington has gone on record requesting "something short of $1 billion" for infrastructure projects, Medicaid reimbursement and other assistance.

This isn't specifically money to close the manufactured budget deficit next biennium, but it is a kind of bailout nonetheless.

Massachusetts is a would-be double-dipper. First the Treasurer asked for a loan:

And then the Governor asked for spending largesse:
