High Tax States Lose Out on Population Growth

Posted by Sam Batkins - March 16, 2006

The Census Bureau has just released data on the fastest growing counties in the United States. It should come as no surprise that 7 of the fastest 10 are from states that have no income tax. New York did not have a single county in the top 100. As the Empire State continues to bleed human capital, residents are moving to Florida and Texas. These two states had 36 of the fastest growing counties.

Only 10 states that lost representation in the last round of Congressional redistricting managed to boast of a county in the top 100. When will politicians begin to take notice of this data and start competing for residents? If they don’t start reforms to limit the tax burden and restrain spending, at least we can enjoy watching high tax states “just fade away.”

Here is the full data.

This is not surprising.
